Next POP intake is from 15 - 26 June 2009

The Department of Psychology offers a Psychology Observational Programme (POP) for those working with patients/clients in psychology-related areas. At the minimum, applicants need to be Psychology students studying in their Honours years.

About POP:
Trainees observe live or taped sessions via video or audio. Observations are done in a group for a minimum of 12 hours with clinical psychologists on a variety of cases which are less complex and more straightforward.
The programme includes 15 hours of case discussion which may include, at the presenter’s discretion, some lectures on various forms of Psychotherapy, as well as attendance at Clinical Teaching Sessions, journal clubs and departmental training.

Duration: Two to three weeks (Intake period: Nov/Dec & Jun/Jul)

The Department of Psychology offers a psychology attachment programme for those working with patients/clients in psychology-related areas. The main training placement will be at IMH and possibly at the Child Guidance Clinic if necessary. This is a 3-month attachment program that allows trainees and interns the opportunity to practice therapy and assessment under supervision. The trainee/intern will undertake lectures given by experienced clinicians in the first month before following through with the client/patient contact in the second and third month.

OBJECTIVES
To develop trainees' practical clinical skills to help in their work with their clients.

COURSE OUTLINE
1. Professional and ethical issues involved in working with patients/clients and other healthcare professionals.
2. Understanding the various psychological and psychiatric disorders.
3. Development of clinical interviewing skills.
4. Using psychological tests in psychological assessment.
5. Using psychological therapies in the management and treatment of clients.


COURSE DESCRIPTION
1. There will be one intake a year (in May) for a 3-month attachment. The length of the attachment will be jointly agreed upon by the hospital and the agency in which the trainee is working.

2. The trainee will be required to spend three working days (8am-5pm, typically Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays) a week at IMH. Other related placements (e.g. Child Guidance Clinic) can also be arranged to complete the supervision programme if necessary. The trainee returns to his office on the other days of the week.

3. The core component of the training programme consists of three modules but attempts can be made to incorporate special needs or interests of the trainee, if necessary. However, this must be discussed and agreed upon before the start of the attachment, and approved by the trainee's agency.

4. Programme Fee: S$4,000 (Intake Period: May - September)



COURSE MODULES
Typically, Modules 1, 2 and 3 will be undertaken concurrently throughout the attachment period:

(a) Module 1 - Preparation for Professional Practice
To equip the trainee with basic knowledge of the requirements before the commencement on clinical work.

(b) Module 2 - Clinical Psychological Assessment
In this module, the trainee is acquainted with the simpler assessment instruments through the following:
(i) attending a lecture on the principles of psychological assessment
(ii) reading and discussing the test manuals with the supervisor to have some familiarity with the test instruments
(iii) observing the supervisor administer tests
(iv) administering the tests with the supervisor present
(v) independently administering the tests.

(c) Module 3 - Psychological Therapies
In this module, the trainee is expected to:
(i) attend lecture on the basic principles of the various therapies
(ii) read and discuss the various therapies with the supervisor and other staff (if necessary)
(iii) observe the supervisor in therapy sessions
(iv) see clinical patients with the supervisor present
(v) independently see clinical patients.

(d) Interviewing skills from Module 1 will be practiced in Modules 2 and 3.



COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1. Total patient contact hours required: 25 hours (minimum) for a 3-month attachment program. This includes the time spent observing the supervisor with patients as well as the trainee's contact with patients during assessment and therapy sessions. The trainee will be required to keep a training log of the type of cases seen and the time spent with the patients. The trainee should personally assess a wide variety of assessment cases as much as possible and manage at least 2 therapy cases (minimum 6 sessions for each therapy case).

2. Total supervision hours required: 50 hours (minimum) for a 3-month attachment. This includes individual supervision, departmental supervision, and attendance at multi-disciplinary team ward rounds, case conferences and seminars in the hospital. Individual supervision will take place before/ after seeing a patient and/or on a weekly basis. The trainee will need to keep a supervision log of the time spent on supervision.

3. The trainee is required to write two discharge summary reports which can be either neuropsychological assessments or therapy cases that the trainee has seen.
- For neuropsychological assessment case, there should be a literature review of the client's presenting problem leading to the use of the various psychometric tests, presentation of the client's relevant history, test scores, interpretation of the test scores, summary and recommendations.
- For therapy case, there should be a literature review of the client's presenting problem, presentation of the client's relevant history, case formulation leading to the treatment model, session by session summary, and a discharge summary. After the supervisor has reviewed the case write-up, one copy is to be submitted to the Psychology Training Co-ordinator to be kept in the Dept.

4. The trainee will also be required to present a case (with the supervisor's help) during one of the Departmental case presentation sessions.
